motion and function of ankle joint (ankle joint part 1)

 Functions of ankle joint:-

The foot must be the stable to provide an adequate base of support.

  • The function as rigid lever for pushing off when walkingf and swimming or jumping .

  • -the foot must also  the mobile to adapt to un even terrain ,absorb shock as the foot hit t he ground

The ankle foot complex consist of 28 bones and 25 component joint

Hinnd foot (posterior segment -tallus ,calcaneous

-mid foot (middle segment)-navicular ,cuboid ,cuniform

-fore foot(anterior segment )metatarsal ,phalenges

Motions of ankle foot complex :-

3 motion of the ankle /foot are approximate

1)dorsiflexion /plantasar flexion-

Sagittal plane  around coronal axis

Dorsiflexion decreases   the angle between the leg and dorsum of the foot

-where as the plantar flexion increases the angle.

2)inverrsion and eversion :-

Frontal plane

-A-P  axis it runs through the length of the foot

3)abduction and adduction :-

Transverse plane vertical axis

4)pronation -and supination:-are termed used to describe composite motions that have componenetor are coupled to each of teh cardinal motions

In non weight bearing pronation is motion about an axis that results in coupled motion of dorsi ,eversion and abduction.

Supination -plantar +inversion+adduction

Pronatin:-dorsi +eversion +abduction
